Everything You Need to Know About the Higgs Boson in Under Eight Minutes [Video]

The Higgs Boson is kind of a big deal. If it does exist, it could provide a key to unifying the standard and quantum models of physics. But what is a Higgs Boson, what does it do, and how does it work? With the help of this animated short, UCI physics professor Daniel Whiteson breaks down the basics of this mysterious particle (or is it a field?) in a way even your parents can understand. Justin Bieber Accepts Award At Tribeca Film Festival

Pop star and manager Scooter Braun were awarded the Disruptive Innovation Award for challenging industry's traditional gatekeepers.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and his manager Scooter Braun were at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday (April 27) to accept the <a href="/news/articles/1682522/justin-bieber-one-direction-recording.jhtml">2012 Tribeca Disruptive Innovation Award</a> for disrupting "the traditional gatekeepers of the music industry." </P><P> </P><P>Sporting a varsity jacket when he took the stage, the 18-year-old noted that a lot of what he does is a reflection of his relationship with his fans. "I don't think that I would be here without the Internet. The fans feel connected to me," he said, <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technology/2012/04/justin-bieber-singer-teen-hearthrob-disruptive-innovator/" target="_blank">ABC News reports</a>. </P><P> </P><P><CENTER><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:757407/cp~name%3Dnews%26id%3D1682760%26vid%3D757407%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A757407" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></CENTER> </P><P> </P><P>According to <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/27/justin-bieber-tribeca-disruptive-innovation-awards_n_1459518.html" target="_blank">The Huffington Post</a>, he recalled his early days of posting videos on YouTube under the moniker KidRauhl and how he was skittish of Braun, initially. </P><P> </P><P>"He called me, and my mom was like, 'Why am I going to trust a guy named Scooter?' " Bieber said. "So she ignored him, and he started calling all of the places where he saw me sing in my videos. ... It was some really creepy stuff. He finally found my great aunt, who I had never met before, to try and get in contact with me." </P><P> </P><P>Of those early days, Braun joked, "Either I was going to be the guy who watches videos of a young boy on the Internet and gets arrested, or I was going to sign him." </P><P> </P><P>The award seems fitting, given how much Bieber's rise to fame has changed the way talent can be discovered via the internet, and can use technology to spread the word. "Ever since then," Bieber said, "We've been taking the world by storm." </P><P> </P><P>Next up, Bieber plans to storm the charts with his June album release, <a href="/news/articles/1682856/justin-bieber-believe-rapping.jhtml"><i>Believe.</i></a> He's expected to drop his <a href="/news/articles/1683642/justin-bieber-boyfriend-music-video-kiss.jhtml">"Boyfriend"</a> video soon in the lead-up to the album. </P><P> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:744688/cp~vid%3D744688%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A744688" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></p></p>

Shape Security: Kleiner Perkins & Eric Schmidt Lead $6M Round In Stealth Security Startup

Screen shot 2012-04-26 at 3.57.21 AMBig corporations have been riddled by security attacks over the past year, and hackers seem to be growing even bolder and more resolute. As a result, market research firm The Radicati Group said that it expects the corporate web security market to grow to $2.5 billion over the next four years. It's in this climate that a young, stealth startup is trying to put companies back on the offensive, and some notable Silicon Valley investors are buying in. Mountain View-based Shape Security is announcing this morning that it has raised $6 million in series A financing, led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt's TomorrowVentures. Accel Partner Peter Wagner, Sequoia Limited Partner Guarav Garg, Baseline Ventures, and unnamed executives at LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook also participated in the round.

In Ticketing increases options for venues and promoters, as long as they're using iOS

Image

Converting a cellphone into a credit card reader is nothing new, but transforming one into a box office for live events could shake things up a bit -- or, at least provide a bit of friendly competition for NFC-based alternatives. In Ticketing has just launched InHand Box Office software for use at live events. The company claims to be one of the greener ticketing outfits out there, and plans to turn your iPhone or iPod touch into a device capable of wirelessly processing payments (and printing out paper receipts, unlike Square or PayPal Here) at independently run concerts or festivals. Potentially reducing time spent in line and preventing congestion at the entrance translates into more people inside the venue, and using your phone instead of a difficult-to-establish credit card merchant account should reduce the friction in throwing such an event. As long as you tend to carry the appropriate iDevice with In Ticketing's new app installed, you can marry it to that iAPS Sled you see above to create your own personal CC processing machine. The only issues? Convincing Gotye to play your house party instead of Coachella next year, and that awkward lack of support for Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone.

Pegatron Corp. Signs Patent Agreement With Microsoft Over Android, Chrome OS Devices

ballmer-ap-photoMicrosoft snagged another one. Pegatron is the latest company to sign a patent agreement with Microsoft concerning Android and Chrome devices. The exact terms of this agreement were not disclosed, but according to a press release issued this morning, Microsoft will receive royalties from Pegatron under this agreement. Microsoft's aggressive strategy to license its patents for Android devices is a loaded subject. On the surface it looks like extortion. Google thinks so. But Google is also the company that built the Android platform, seemingly ignoring key patents held by Microsoft. Sure, Microsoft is trailing far behind in the mobile races, but by licensing patents it holds to competitors, the company is just utilizing its assets to make a few bucks. That's not cheating. That's playing smart.

StumbleUpon Reaches 25M Registered Users, Plans For Global Expansion And API

stumbleupon logoCEO Garrett Camp tells me that content discovery service StumbleUpon hit 25 million registered users earlier this week, and that those users are pretty damn active ? the service is now seeing 1.2 billion Stumbles a month. For someone like me, who sees the impressive traffic that StumbleUpon can drive to an article, the growth isn't a big surprise, but it's worth remembering that StumbleUpon had some, uh, stumbles of its own, having been acquired by eBay and then spun out again as a separate company in April 2009. At the time, Camp says the site had about 5.5 million registered users, so that's almost 5x growth in three years.
