Citi Analysts: Facebook Ads Are Taking Spending Away From Display, Not Search

Back in May, we reported that Facebook now accounts for one out of three ad impressions in the U.S., and that, really, no other web property in the U.S. comes close (Yahoo was second with 10 percent). That means that Facebook served approximately 340 billion ads in the first quarter. It's probably not a surprise, then, that advertising makes up for about 89 percent of the social network's total revenues, which are estimated at about $1.6 billion for the first six months of 2011. Today, on Citi's third quarter search marketing trends call, the panelists discussed the current landscape of search advertising, among other things that Google is maintaining its dominant market share in advertising spend on search, at 80 to 81 percent of total spend. While the panelists said that they're not seeing much demand for social search ad targeting, there is obviously a ton of interest in marketing on Facebook.

Copping a Latitude: Genetics Supports Idea Cultural Interaction Was More East to West Than North to South

The finding supports a case made by Jared Diamond and others that migration along the same lines of latitude in Eurasia promoted the sharing of crops, animals and technology, but that wide variations in climate found in the New World's north-to-south orientation hindered cultural exchanges

East often meets West and vice versa, but did North frequently meet South when it comes to the history of people and technological innovations migrating across the continents? New genetic analysis suggests the way that continents are oriented may indeed have played a key role in our cultural interactions over time.

For decades scientists have suggested that the east-west orientation of Eurasia helped spread ancient culture and technological innovations such as agriculture and writing more rapidly than occurred in the oppositely oriented Americas, with biologist and ecologist Jared Diamond perhaps most famously making this case in his Pulitzer Prize?winning Gun, Germs and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies (W. W. Norton & Co., 1999). The idea is that populations at comparable latitudes experience largely similar climates, making it easier to adapt crops and domesticated animals and, consequently, humans and technology to new locations east to west. On the other hand, migrating across lines of latitude, north to south, involves adapting to new climates.

Given this notion, genetic analysis might reveal greater differences among human populations north to south than east to west within continents, says population geneticist Sohini Ramachandran at Brown University. If migration is harder across lines of latitude than longitude, then populations would be more isolated north to south, giving them more chances to diversify compared with one another.

To see if this was the case, Ramachandran and her colleague Noah Rosenberg at Stanford University analyzed genetic variation data in 678 genetic markers from 68 populations. This included data from 39 populations from Eurasia?including Europe, southern and central Asia, and the Middle East?collected from the Human Genome Diversity Cell Line Panel, along with 29 populations from Native American groups, such as the Cree, Ojibwa, Maya and Zapotec, gathered by former collaborators of the researchers. "Only recently did we have the kind of genetic data to perform this kind of comparative analysis of Native American and Old World populations," Ramachandran says.

The researchers measured how distant or divergent each population was from one another in terms of both mileage and genetic variation. They discovered more genetic differences north to south in the Americas than over comparable distances east to west in Eurasia, findings detailed online September 13 in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

"The findings here are very interesting, with the implications that patterns of technological innovations were influenced by our physical climates and physical environments," says evolutionary anthropologist and human population geneticist Jeffrey Long at the University of New Mexico, who did not take part in this study. "We tend to think of humans as separated from ecology, and in fact there has been ecological structuring of our recent history, and perhaps even in the rise of cosmopolitan society. It's nice for me to see the field of human population genetics maturing out of the who-begat-who phase and into investigating these larger questions."

In the Americas distance north to south explained a good deal of genetic variation. Distance east to west did so as well, although to a lesser extent. This is probably due to the diagonal northwest-southeast positions that North and South America have in relation to each other, respectively.

One potential caveat regarding these findings is that culture and technology could spread from one population to another without them otherwise intermingling and sharing genes, Ramachandran says. As such, although they found evidence that changes in latitude could impede genetic flow, it might not necessarily impair cultural or technological flow.

Future research could go into even finer detail when it comes to ancient obstacles to migrations, including mountain ranges and other physical barriers as well as social barriers such as marriage practices or language differences, Ramachandran suggests. "We can develop new insight into the effects of geography and culture on recent human evolution as we gather more and more genetic data from human populations," she says. Further studies could also look at the impact of patterns of genetic variations on health, Long adds.

New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has a "minor break" in his nose, but has no limitations and will play in New York's next game at Baltimore.

That update came Monday, one day after he was hit in the face by a Raiders defender and finished the 34-24 defeat by wearing a visor, which he will do for the next few weeks.

"It's probably 'minor' to everybody else, but probably more than that to him," coach Rex Ryan said of Sanchez's latest injury. "If we got our nose broke, we'd probably think it was more than minor. That happens. He got hit in the nose, but the thing I love about Mark is how competitive he is."

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie has a bruised lung and ribs and his playing status is uncertain. He was hurt in the second half, and taken to a hospital for further evaluation before flying home with the team.

Backup tight end Jeff Cumberland is out for the season after tearing an Achilles tendon.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson said star running back Darren McFadden should be ready to go this week despite leaving the victory late in the fourth quarter when his hamstring tightened.

"I'm going to be very cautious with him to make sure he's OK," Jackson said. "But I think he'll be fine."

The Raiders also lost a pair of defensive backs in the first quarter, cornerback Chris Johnson (hamstring) and safety Michael Huff (concussion). Jackson said he would know more about their status on Wednesday.

Michael Vick's injured right hand originally was reported as broken, then updated by the Eagles on Monday to a severe bruise. Also hurt in the loss to the Giants were receiver Jeremy Maclin (hamstring strain), and CB Brandon Hughes (strained hamstring).

Indianapolis Colts QB Kerry Collins was still being evaluated for a concussion, with coach Jim Caldwell uncertain of the diagnosis.

Also sidelined by concussions Sunday were Eagles receiver Riley Cooper; Falcons running back Jason Snelling; and Buccaneers LB Geno Hayes.

Hayes was hurt on the same play as safety Cody Grimm, who will be sidelined with a right knee injury. Grimm and Hayes were stopping Atlanta's Michael Turner for a 1-yard gain.

"We don't know the extent of that yet. We have to get the MRI," Bucs coach Raheem Morris said of Grimm's injury. "I know his MCL was messed up and he's got some other stuff that we're checking on right now. So it may not be for the year. We're not sure of that yet."

Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers could miss Sunday's game against Minnesota after hurting his ankle in a 20-17 loss to San Diego. The injury, which the team initially reported was to his right knee, occurred after Flowers intercepted a pass.

Coach Todd Haley said Monday he won't know details of the injury until later in the week, but Flowers said after the game it still hurt after an injection to dull the pain.

Kansas City has already lost running back Jamaal Charles, safety Eric Berry, tight end Tony Moeaki and linebacker Brandon Siler to season-ending injuries.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur said running back Peyton Hillis has improved after missing Sunday's game against Miami with strep throat. Hillis was sent home from the stadium.

Cleveland Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas has a strained knee but it doesn't seem serious.

Other key injuries updated Monday include Green Bay tackle Bryan Bulaga (sprained and bruised left knee) and running back Ryan Grant (kidney bruise); Giants DE Justin Tuck, who aggravated a neck problem and also strained his groin; and Ravens safety Haruki Nakamura, who sustained damage to the cruciate ligament in his right knee.

"It looks promising; maybe a month," coach John Harbaugh said of Nakamura.

Jaguars fullback and special teams ace Montell Owens injured a knee ligament and will be out one or two weeks, coach Jack Del Rio said Monday.

Jags defensive coordinator Mel Tucker tore a quadriceps muscle catching punts Friday and will have surgery later this week. He directed the defense from upstairs in the coaching box Sunday in a 16-10 loss at Carolina.

Google spurns Oracle $2.2 billion Android damage claim (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Google Inc urged a federal judge to reject an Oracle Corp expert's recommendation that it pay more than $2.2 billion for infringing patents for Java technology used in the Android operating system.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco had on July 22 rejected Oracle's request for as much as $6.1 billion of damages, but gave the company a chance to revise its claim. A trial is scheduled to begin next month.

Oracle had sued Google in August 2010, claiming that the Internet search company's Android system infringed Java patents that Oracle acquired when it bought Sun Microsystems Inc seven months earlier. It also alleged copyright infringement.

The lawsuit is one of several among phone and software companies seeking a greater share of profits in the growing market for smartphones and tablets.

In a Tuesday letter to the judge, Google lawyer Robert Van Nest said a new report by Oracle damages expert Iain Cockburn recommended damages of more than $2 billion for copyright infringement, including $1.2 billion for unjust enrichment in 2012 alone, and $201.8 million for patent infringement.

Van Nest said the September 12 report is deficient because Cockburn either speculated about or did not explain how he calculated damages, and failed to show how much revenue Sun or Oracle might have earned by partnering with Google on Android.

The report "ignores governing law and the guidelines in this court's July 22, 2011 order," Van Nest concluded.

Google plans to ask Alsup to exclude portions of Cockburn's findings from the case. A Google spokesman called the revised damages estimate "flawed."

Oracle spokeswoman Deborah Hellinger declined to comment. Cockburn, a Boston University management professor, did not respond to requests for comment.

In the July 22 order, Alsup faulted Google for trying to downplay the value of Android, and use its 2006 talks with Sun regarding a lower-cost Java license as a basis to limit Oracle's damages to a fraction of what it seeks.

But he scolded Cockburn for having "overreached" in an earlier report by assuming the entire value of Android was tied to Oracle's patents, rather than only parts alleged to infringe those patents. He urged that any revised report be more specific, and threatened to exclude it altogether if it "fails to measure up in any substantial and unseverable way."

Alsup suggested that $100 million should be a "starting point" to help determine damages, before adjusting for several changes in the marketplace since the Sun license talks.

Google is based in Mountain View, California, and Oracle in nearby Redwood City.

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia ? The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand have agreed that troops along their disputed border should meet regularly to ease tensions and withdraw from a temple area as ordered by an international court in July.

Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong says that Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen made the agreement Thursday afternoon in Phnom Penh.

Hor Namhong called the meeting a big step in improving ties.

Relations between the countries have been strained since July 2008 when periodic skirmishes broke out in the region around the centuries-old, Cambodian-owned Preah Vihear temple. It sits on a mountain straddling the disputed border.

More Kids Visiting Hospitals for Ingesting Parents' Meds (LiveScience.com)

The number of children going to hospitals and emergency rooms after accidentally ingesting medication has increased in recent years, a new study says.

Between 2001 and 2008, there was a 36 percent increase in admissions, and a 28 percent increase in emergency department visits for unintentional exposure to medication among children 5 years old or younger, the researchers said. Both of these increases were significantly greater than the rise in the number of kids in this age group (8 percent).

"The problem of pediatric medication poisoning is getting worse, not better," said study researcher Dr. Randall Bond, an emergency medicine physician at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Prescription medications (as opposed to over-the-counter ones) accounted for most of the emergency room visits (55 percent) and hospital admissions (76 percent). In fact, emergency department visits for ingestion of prescription opioid painkillers, such as oxycodone, increased 101 percent over the time period.

For the most part, the increase was due to more children finding and ingesting medication on their own. Errors in dosing at home were uncommon and increased only minimally, the study said.

"Prevention efforts of parents and caregivers to store medicines in locked cabinets, or up and away from children, continue to be crucial," Bond said. "However, the largest potential benefit would come from packaging design changes that reduce the quantity a child could quickly and easily access in a self-ingestion episode, like flow restrictors on liquids and one-at-a-time tablet dispensing containers," he said.

Bond and colleagues studied patient records from 2001 to 2008 in the National Poison Data system ? an electronic database of all calls to Poison Control Centers. A total of 453,559 children were included in the study.

The most likely explanation for these trends is a rise in the number of medications prescribed to adults, and thus available for small children to access in homes, Bond said. A 1998 survey found that half of adults had taken at least one prescription medication in the preceding week, and 7 percent had taken five or more. In 2006, the same surveyors found that 55 percent had taken at least one prescription medication in the preceding week and 11 percent had taken five or more.

The new study is published today (Sept. 16) in the Journal of Pediatrics. Bond will present the study Sept. 20 at a meeting for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

As part of September?s National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, Miami-Dade Parks has launched ?Fit-to-Play: Health, Wellness and Obesity Prevention? Out-of-School program.

Kids, age 6-14, can enjoy fun, fully-supervised programming after school, with team sports and activities focused on nutrition and wellness, and develop their appreciation of nature, science and the cultural arts.?

?As today?s kids are prone to spending less time exercising and more time in front of the TV, computer, or video-game console, it is more important than ever that we encourage them to be more active and develop a healthier lifestyle,? said Miami-Dade Parks Director Jack Kardys.

The impact of childhood obesity on children?s physical health includes increased risk for pre-diabetes, heart disease, as well as bone and joint problems. Statistics also show that children who are overweight are at a higher risk of remaining overweight in adulthood.
